School Year 2024-2025  Vision  Screening

Vision pre-screening by the RI Lions clubs began soon after the school year 2024-2025  started. Once many of the school districts where the Lions clubs do the vision prescreening was complete (or nearly complete) by the end of October, 2024, the equipment used (Welch-Allyn Spot cameras) was available for the RI Lions Sight Foundation (RILSF) members to start doing vision prescreening in the towns where the local Lions club do not have the resources or time to do this volunteering.

In the 2024-2025 school year, the RILSF and local Lions clubs helped school nurses by prescreening 37,280 RI students (kindergarten, grades 1-5, 7, and 9) at 172 schools.  This was a significant increase from the previous school year, both because more schools were screened and because the reporting was better.

The following table breaks out the data by town. The previous school year's data is included for comparision.

All screenings are coordinated with the school nurse or medical coordinator at each school. If a recommendation to see an eye professional is giving for a student, the nurse may rescreen the student and, if the nurse comes to the same conclusion, notifies the student's parent(s) of this recommendation.

Student from the Brown University Ophthalmology program helped out with the vision screening this school year and were a valuable resource.

All K-12 students in RI can get eye testing and, if necessary, eye glasses. See the
Eye Exams and Eye Glasses RILSF program for more information.
